Conversations with the universe

On becoming

Every time I try to define myself, that version of me slips away like a fish in the sunlight

Let’s slip into this slowly. Get our bearings. Begin in the middle.

Below is the me I was back in October, inspired by windswept stones and my special spot in the woods. And– at this particular, small sliver of a moment in time– absolutely obsessed with catching pentagons and rainbows from the setting sun, completely in-camera. In my favorite image from the woods shoot (pictured in our imaginations, though not actually here– maybe I’ll share it later), I dropped the red shawl and wrapped myself entirely in light. It was wonderful! I could play like this forever…

It’s a serious game, corresponding with the universe. This conversation, THIS is what creativity is about: back and forth, checking in, feeling a body yes– a no?– following a trail, opening your heart, your vessel, receiving the words, the image, the story. Vulnerability. Synchronicity. Wait. The magic will find you. Trust, patience, breathing. A practice… (from “No Refunds,” written July 2021)

Currently stuck in my head

Double Desire. Yes, two songs from this same album (Desire, Bob Dylan, 1976). Because why would you ever stop at one desire when you could have two?! My favorite way to ‘read’ stories is through songs, and this album has some fantastic storytelling (I like Isis and Black Diamond Bay as musical flash fiction), but the two songs below are catchy, back-to-back, and they feature gorgeous backup vocals by Emmylou Harris.

I owe a huge thank you to my favorite dj, who reminded me of this album recently, as well as the absolute need for these two songs to be played together. They are now successfully stuck– together!– in my head!

When I send you a message next week, I’ll share some of my writing.

Until then…

Love,
Jaime

P.S. What do you think so far? I’d love to hear from you!
